Guess how much I love you really is the most beautiful children’s book!!

The story is heartwarming and kind and the watercolor painted illustrations are beautifully gentle!

We signed up to participate in the 10 Days of Kid-Made Christmas Ornaments – inspired by books, and this idea was certainly something we wanted to do!

Our Christmas Tree Ornament is a great child’s project, and it makes a fantastic gift!

Love you to The Moon and Back - Christmas Tree Ornament

Our – Love you to the Moon and Back Moon Love Hangers!!

We made ours from salt dough – you can however make this from clay – we always use DAS Air Hardening Modeling Clay when working on projects.

How to Make salt dough… – here is the link to our fail proof simple recipe!

How to make a Guess How Much I love you Ornament

When you have your salt dough – or clay – ready, this is how to make a moon with two circle cookie cutters…

You need 2 circles. The biggest one is the final size of the moon and the smaller one (about 2/3 of the large one) is going to be used to cut out the centre.

First cut the larger circle – and then cut out the moon shape – illustrated above!

Additionally I made little stars and hearts – these are going to hang on the bottom.

(We ended up just using the hearts…)

Drying Salt Dough Christmas Ornament

I added in holes to hang our ornament before I dried it – the best holes are made with drinking straws!!

Big hole at the top – to hang the ribbon, and a smaller hole at the bottom – to hang the hearts…

When our salt dough was dry we all got painting! We used Acrylic Paint – as we want it to last – and I made sure I mixed the yellow – orange and green ‘watercolor’ colors before hand.

Guess How much I love you Paint colors

I don’t like to give to many instructions when painting with children. I prefer the process to be free and un – adult – interrupted as much as possible.

By choosing the colors I can at least give some direction to the final project – without saying a word.

Making our Love you to the moon Christmas Tree Ornaments

Once the paint was dry we added string on the top to hang out ornament on the tree – and with a little nylon, we added the hearts underneath.

You can of course choose anything you like to hang it with – ribbon, cotton, most things work well!

If you do not already have this beautiful little book I really recommend it!

I don’t often push a book – as it is such a personal choice – but this one is without a doubt something to have on your shelves!
